Jesus once said, “Let the children come to me, and don’t try to stop them! People who are like these children belong to God’s kingdom.” (Matt 19:14)
So relax! God put the wiggle in children. Don’t feel you have to suppress it in God’s house. All are welcome! Here are some strategies that parents may find useful.
- Sit toward the front, where it is easier for your little ones to see and hear what’s going on at the altar. Those seats are almost always available, and children tire of seeing the backs of others’ heads.
- Or sit in the back. There is a “family pew” in the rear of the worship area where kids have room to sit on the floor and move around a bit.
- Sing the hymns, pray, and voice the responses. Children learn liturgical behavior by copying you. (Don’t be surprised if you find your five-year-old leading worship with their stuffed animals.)
- If you have to leave the service with your child, feel free to do so, but please come back.
- Bring fidget toys if it helps your child concentrate. There are also books and coloring materials available.
- Ask for a children’s bulletin. They include activities that usually connect with the theme of the morning’s worship.
Children in worship are a sign of a healthy congregation! Their presence is a gift to the church.
