Do you like murder mysteries? They are one of the biggest genre of novels, TV shows and movies. They have even crossed over into telling real life stories with True Crime genre shows. And then there are the murder mysteries that tell the story of people trying to figure out true crime cases. Basically, it comes down to the reality that we just like stories of mysteries with high stakes where the bad guy/girl is caught and justice is served.

But what do you do with a murder mystery when the victim isn’t dead?

I mean, what I am trying to get at isn’t as simple as that. Jesus is murdered by the very people who he came to save. Yes, I mean murdered. Jesus did not “break the law,” he wasn’t a criminal, so his punishment would be “deserved.” He was only the target of those who disregarded his life because they were trying to maintain their own power and status quo. There was no real justification for the taking of his life. He was a victim of the insecure, corrupt leaders and the ruling Roman Empire.

But Jesus led a sinless life, therefore fulfilling the law, the only one to do so… ever. St. Paul reminds us in Romans 6:23 that the wages of sin is death. Since Jesus did not sin, when his earthy body died, Death was broken. Yes, I mean a capital “D” Death, the very concept. Therefore, free from his fleshly form, Jesus was able to preach to everyone who had died and rested outside of time. Jesus led the masses from the place of the dead and brought them to their true home in oneness with God.

As the first-born of the Resurrection, Jesus then appeared to his disciples, ushering in a new age of the world where Death is not the end.

I think it is profound that the death of Jesus was the very thing that destroyed Death. The resurrection was the proof that he was who he said he was and lived the life he preached for us.

Our funeral liturgy says that when we were baptized into Christ Jesus we were baptized into his death, so that just as Jesus was raised by the power of the Father, we too might live a new life. This means we have died to ourselves and are born anew, or again, this time into Christ’s life. Although we are still human and subject to the weakness of the flesh, we are new creations in the Spirit, free to love each other as Jesus loves us.

We are alive in this life, not because we have attained what is promised, but because we have received the promise. And what God promises comes about. Therefore, we aren’t held by the chains of our bondage to sin. So, although the fleshly body might pass away, the Redeemed Creation we have been born into, can never die.

This is the Great Mystery, and one that we will know fully in the Resurrection.
